Engagement Parties are a blast to photograph, especially when they’re in unique places like a private Southampton, NY backyard. Having photographed countless proposals, engagement sessions, engagement parties, and rehearsal dinners in New York City, it’s a real treat to leave the city for somewhere new. I started this event by capturing a mini-engagement session with the couple, Carolann and Michael with their Golden Retriever Nash. From there, I went on to photograph family photos and then the details (food, place settings, the backyard setup).

Photographing NYC engagement parties can feel like a mini-wedding, as the guests are typically the most important people in the couple’s lives. These parties involve planning and coordination on every level as well. However, what’s unique is the emotions. On an engagment session and party, there are absolutely no nerves.

The Malin is a shared co-working space that rents out individual spaces on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis. I leveraged 3 different spaces / looks on this shoot all while photographing in the same room.

Zack and Mia's Central Park Summer Proposal

Zack couldn’t have chosen a more perfect evening to pop the big question, as this late summer evening felt more like an early September day; soft lighting and a cool breeze. I’m so glad I was chosen as their proposal photographer to document a real NYC moment in Central Park. Both of their reactions were so genuine, and having family there to celebrate the moment made everything so much more special.

The best place to propose at sunset is Ladies Pavilion on Central Park’s West Side. Here you’ll take a short trip in to the park from Manhattan’s West Side, you’ll have bits of the Manhattan skyline as the backdrop to your moment, and water from the boat lake surrounding you.

For tonight’s proposal we timed the moment with the sunset. Zack arrived right on time (No what, matter we always come prepared with a small flash). On tonight’s secret proposal, I still had plenty of daylight to work with as the couple approached and I did not need to use flash, so the element of surprise remained. Once Zack got down on one knee and popped the question I was snapping away.

Award Dinner Honoree Headshot Session

The following quick headshot session is for a long time non-profit client based in Manhattan. The subject photographed will be honored at their annual award dinner in September. The images I captured will not only be used in print and digital materials throughout the venue this September, but in marketing and advertising material leading up to the event and post event.

Jeremy's Surprise Engagement atop Outlook Hill on Governors Island

Photographing a surprise proposal on Governors Island is memorable experience Unlike many parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island city where there are tourists everywhere, Governors Island is quiet. Why? Because a ferry is the only way to get to Governors Island and that keeps people away. The views on the island are well worth a quick ferry ride, especially if this is where you are going to propose.

Here are a few tips to make sure your secret NYC marriage proposal on Governors Island is captured perfectly by your professional photographer or friend:
