Engagement Session

Port Washington Long Island Engagement Photographer - Josh & Sydney

Capturing Josh and Sydney’s engagement session in Port Washington, NY was a real throwback for me. I grew up on the North Shore of Long Island and I went to high school with Josh’s sister many years ago. To see how much Josh has grown up and how much the Port Washington waterfront has changed is remarkable. The couple chose Port Washington for their engagement photos not only for the view, but for it’s sentimental location. Just down the road is their favorite pizza shop, Salvatores.

Patrick's Long Island City Engagement Session at Sunset

The Long Island City waterfront captures New York City perfectly with its iconic skyline views of the Empire State Building, the 59th Street Bridge, the United Nations, and, of course, the famous NYC sunsets and sunrises. What I love most about photographing in Long Island City and Gantry Plaza State Park is how private and intimate this area feels compared to other parts of New York City. Somehow, the tourists haven’t quite figured this spot out yet—which makes it the perfect hidden gem for proposals and engagement sessions.

Tonight’s engagement session with Patrick and Sam during golden hour could not have been any better. As the sun set over the East River, the soft golden light lit up the skyline and created the most beautiful backdrop. Between the calm atmosphere of the park and those unforgettable city views, it was the perfect evening to capture their love.

Why is Gantry Plaza State Park a good place for proposals and engagement sessions?

Gantry Plaza State Park is one of the most underrated photo spots in New York City. The park offers unobstructed skyline views, open green spaces, and a quieter, more intimate atmosphere compared to more crowded Manhattan locations. During sunset, the light reflects beautifully off the water and skyscrapers, creating a warm and romantic glow. It’s ideal for couples looking for a mix of natural beauty and the classic NYC skyline—without the heavy crowds.

Central Park Conservatory Garden - Springtime Engagement Session

Photographing Brett and Elle’s engagement session up in the Conservatory Garden of Central Park NYC was a real treat. Not many people, New Yorkers included, know about this section of the park. Although the iconic landmarks like Bethesda Fountain, Bow Bridge, the model boat sailing pond, and the mall take the lime light, the Conservatory Garden is just as special to NYC. It’s just a little bit further out of the way.

I have photographed inn Central Park countless times, but the Conservatory Garden only a few times. I love discovering this part of Central Park every time I come up to 105 street. Not only is it picturesque and charming, but it also has some unique elements that made for the prettiest backdrops while we walked around, got to know each other, and created beautiful images for these two, and their pup.

Austin's Picture Perfect Central Park Fall Foliage Proposal

Austin chose Ladies Pavilion “Cove” on the West Side of Central Park for his proposal because of these factors:

  • The location offers views of Manhattan’s skyscrapers.

  • It has relative privacy compared to more popular areas.

  • Fall foliage is strong in that area—leaves turn color, adding visual depth.

  • Afternoon light offers softer shadows and good direction for photos.

The Proposal Story

We scheduled during a workday afternoon in autumn to avoid heavy foot traffic. The trees were showing rich fall colors, creating a vibrant backdrop. As light softened in the afternoon, we used shaded spots under trees and near pavilion architecture to reduce harsh contrasts.

At the moment of the proposal, Austin knelt at a spot that included skyline in the background and foliage framing from above. Multiple angles were used: wide shots showing the full setting, medium shots to include foliage and structure, and close-ups for emotional detail. The location’s combination of fall color, architectural framing, and soft light contributed to strong images without needing elaborate setup.

Why Ladies Pavilion Cove Works Well in Fall

  • Fall foliage adds color contrast and texture to photos.

  • This spot balances nature and Cityscape; skyline is visible, but trees soften urban edges.

  • Afternoon light during fall tends to be less harsh; shadows more manageable.

  • The location is easier to access and less crowded during weekdays.

  • Structural elements (pavilion, stone, paths) provide framing options.

Tips for Planning a Fall Proposal at Ladies Pavilion Cove

  • Choose a weekday afternoon in autumn when foliage is near peak.

  • Scout your route ahead, see where trees frame skyline and where light might be harsh.

  • Use clothing with colors that complement fall foliage (earth tones, warm colors).

  • Plan for shots at different distances (wide, medium, close) to vary the feel.

  • Work with a photographer experienced in managing changing light and shade.
