For this proposal, the timing was perfect. It was early fall, first thing in the morning (no crowds) ,and the light was golden—soft, warm, and just starting to rise high in the sky.

As the sunlight peaked above the city buildings Juan arrived to the Gapstow Bridge. After a few moments, he proposed. The moment was so simple, and genuine! With the park glowing in those first hints of autumn color I was really, really excited for what’s to come. After she said yes, they stayed for portraits around the bridge, the water, and the nearby paths. The golden light reflected off the leaves and water, giving every photo a soft, glowing tone that only happens this time of year.

One of the biggest challenges of proposing in Central Park is the sheer number of people. By 10am in the morning, especially on weekends, tourists and large groups flood the park, and finding a quiet moment becomes tricky. That’s why proposing at 8AM is a game-changer.

At this hour, Central Park is calm, serene, and nearly empty—just you and your partner. The soft morning light blankets every photo, and we have the freedom to move around without waiting for crowds to clear. It’s a private, uninterrupted moment in one of the busiest cities in the world.

For this recent session, I arrived early to scout the best angles and lighting around the bridge and pond. As the couple arrived, I discreetly captured the build-up, the surprise, and the joy of the proposal itself. After she said yes, we spent the next 30 minutes wandering nearby paths for a mini engagement session—taking advantage of the beautiful golden light and peaceful scenery.

After she said yes, we explored nearby pathways, soaking in candid laughter, soft embraces, and portraits bathed in the calm light of that midday hour.

On this Central Park secret proposal at Gapstow Bridge, all the boxes for a perfect surprise were checked.

John planned carefully. He chose late afternoon so that the light would be just right. I arrived early to scout vantage points—where trees frame the skyline, where reflections on the pond are strongest, and where the bridge’s arch gives the best depth.

As shadows lengthened and the light softened across the water, John led his partner over the bridge. There, he asked. The moment was quiet but full—her surprise, his smile, the way her breath showed in winter air. After she said yes, we lingered: walks along the path, small spontaneous kisses, portraits in the fading light. Devin and Lindsay's Central Park Gapstow Bridge Proposal

Proposing to your partner in New York City’s Central Park can feel like something out of a movie. Whether your proposing in a secluded area or in the wide open, with a single conic building in the background or with all of the midtown Manhattan as your backdrop the moment is surreal. For Devin and Lindsay’s proposal, Devin chose the Gapstow Bridge in the southern part of Central Park.

I helped Devin decide where around the Gapstow Bridge to propose based upon a few concerns. We didn’t want other people in the photos, he wanted some privacy, and he wanted to capture the bridge in our photos. So, we decided the best spot to capture the Gapstow Bridge and to give them some privacy was just below the bridge. Here we I photographed the foliage, the bridge, and most importantly their intimate moment. Post proposal, we were able to wonder around for additional photos without having to walk all that far.

How do you propose to your partner in New York City? How do you even get them to wear something nice?

“Date night in New York City” is how Devin convinced his girlfriend, Lindsay, to wear something nice and how /when he was going to propose. However, the next part was the real challenge. He wanted to propose at the Gapstow Bridge in the southern part of Central Park. How was he going to convince her to walk into Central Park wearing heels? As we discussed his proposal plans, I recommended that Devin arrive super early for their dinner reservation, which was across from the park. Then, as a way to kill time, go on a quick walk through the park. Mission accomplished!
